Things To Do in Deosai

The Land of the Giants is open for only a few months each year. Here is how to make the most of a crossing of the Deosai plateau.

Northern Pakistan is a land of extremes — of altitude, of weather, of beauty. The valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan hold some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, and travelling through them requires both preparation and a willingness to be surprised.

In this guide, we share what we have learned from years of travelling these routes with guests from around the world. The advice below is practical, but the most important thing you can bring is an open mind — the Karakoram will take care of the rest.

Planning Your Journey

The first decision is when to go. Spring brings blossoms to the lower valleys, summer opens the high passes and plateaus, and autumn paints Hunza in gold and crimson. Each season has its own character, and the best time depends on what you want to see and do.

Once you have chosen a season, the next step is to decide on pace. The Karakoram rewards slow travel — an extra day in a village, a longer stop at a viewpoint, a second cup of tea with a local family. We design our itineraries with this in mind, building in time for the unexpected.

What To Expect On The Ground

Roads in northern Pakistan range from excellent to adventurous. The Karakoram Highway is a feat of engineering, but side routes to lakes, meadows and plateaus can be rough. We use experienced local drivers and well-maintained vehicles, and we never rush a journey that should be savoured.

Connectivity is generally good in the main towns — Skardu, Gilgit and Karimabad — but fades quickly in the higher valleys. We recommend downloading maps in advance and letting family know your rough itinerary before you head into the mountains.

Above all, travel with respect. These valleys are home to communities with deep roots and strong traditions. A little curiosity and warmth goes a long way, and the hospitality you receive will likely be the memory you carry home.
